Michelle Freemantle

Michelle creates ceramic work using a combination of hand-building, press moulding and wheel-throwing techniques. Her pieces are tactile and visually engaging, with incised lines and text enriched by layers of slip and oxide.

Her functional ceramics balance utility with artistic expression, designed to complement both food and the experience of eating. Each piece has its own distinct character, reflecting her interest in form, surface and individuality.

Michelle has worked as an assistant to Rob Bibby at Woodnewton Pottery and with salt-glaze potter Christine Pedley in La Borne, France.

In 2000, she was selected to participate in the International Workshop of Ceramic Art (IWCAT) in Tokoname, Japan, and was invited to return two years later to create work for an international group exhibition. She has also studied in Finland and later returned to develop a new body of work in Hämeenlinna.

Landlines

Inspired by the agricultural landscape of the East Yorkshire Wolds, Landlines draws on the patterns, colours and contours of the surrounding fields. Layers of yellow, green, white and charcoal echo the changing patchwork of the landscape, while the tactile surfaces reflect its natural textures and rhythms.

Grasping the Orient

Inspired by time spent in Japan, Grasping the Orient reflects the thoughtful relationship between food and the vessels from which it is served. The collection celebrates the way ceramics can enhance the experience of eating, with each piece designed to complement its contents and encourage a deeper appreciation of the meal.
