(Chinese Parasol Tree) A rare and unusual plant for the expereienced gardener. Firmiana simplex is an unusual small, spreading tree best in a sheltered position with very large dark green leaves and smooth, green young stems. Leaves turn yellow in autumn. Flowers generally only produced after a long hot summer. Narrow and upright when young, starting to spread once established. Although reasonably hardy it requires hot summers to grow well so best grown in the South of the UK. If planted in cooler, wet areas, they can be difficult and prone to die back. Ht 6-8m. Sheltered position. Hot sunny site.
