Stef Ottevanger is an artist whose practice has long been centred on the observation and depiction of animals. From an early age, she developed a fascination with animal forms, creating illustrations and small sculptures that laid the foundation for her later work.
Her training at Harrogate School of Art introduced her to a wide range of materials and techniques, including charcoal, oil paint, watercolour, ink, clay, plaster, and resin. Following a period working in education, she returned to her artistic practice with a renewed focus, concentrating on sculptural work.
Since the early 1980s, Ottevanger has specialised in clay sculptures of domestic animals. Her work is characterised by a strong sense of form and personality, reflecting both careful observation and an enduring affinity with her subjects.
Artist Statement:
I don’t want my work to be a scale model or an ornament but more of an impression of the animal. These are animals with attitude!
