Martin McWilliam

Martin McWilliam is a ceramic artist based in Germany whose work draws on traditional making and firing methods. His vessels carry an ancient quality in form and surface, underpinned by a conceptual approach that borders on the scientific.

Internationally recognised, he has received awards and his work is held in museum and gallery collections around the world.

Working primarily with clay, water, wood fire, and space, McWilliam explores the vessel as both object and image. Since the early 1990s, his practice has focused on the external surface of form, at times reducing the sense of three-dimensionality to create a reversed trompe-l’œil effect. This approach reflects an ongoing dialogue with historic ceramic traditions, particularly the understated aesthetics of Japanese pottery.

Artist Statement:

“I was inspired by the simple historic vessels that first drew me to pottery, though they seemed initially out of reach—the kind of pots celebrated in Japan over five hundred years ago. From the early nineties I worked on the external image of a vessel, almost removing the third dimension and creating a reversed trompe-l’œil type of form. It felt that in this space I was closer to the original than by trying to replicate it.”
