Hilke MacIntyre

Hilke MacIntyre is a contemporary artist working across printmaking, painting and ceramics. Born in Germany near the Danish border, she studied architecture at the College for Art & Design in Kiel before working for architects in Germany and Britain. Since moving to Scotland in 1995, she has focused on developing her artistic practice, beginning printmaking at Edinburgh Printmakers alongside painting and experimenting with clay reliefs, which evolved into her distinctive ceramic work.

Her simplified figurative style combines bold shapes, strong colour and decorative pattern, drawing inspiration from nature, daily life on Scotland’s East Coast, and indigenous and folk art traditions. Influenced by twentieth-century art and design movements, her work balances direct visual impact with a handcrafted quality.

Hilke’s work is widely exhibited in galleries throughout Britain, and her woodcuts and linocuts have been used for numerous illustrations. She lives and works in rural Fife near St Andrews.
