Taking care of your living christmas tree

Bringing Your Tree Inside

Living Christmas trees need time to adjust to warmer indoor temperatures. Gradually acclimatise your tree over a few days, starting in a sheltered porch, greenhouse or cool room before bringing it into your home.

Once inside, keep your tree well-watered, ensure the pot has adequate drainage and position it away from radiators and direct heat.

Ideally, your tree should spend no longer than 7–10 days indoors to give it the best chance of thriving for years to come.

Taking Your Tree Back Outside

After Christmas, gradually reintroduce your tree to cooler temperatures by placing it in a sheltered position before returning it to its outdoor home.

Your tree can remain in a pot or be planted in the garden. If keeping it potted, ensure the container is large enough to accommodate its growing roots and repot when necessary.

As your tree grows, it may eventually become too large to bring indoors, at which point it can be permanently planted in the garden.

Year-Round Care

Whether planted in the ground or kept in a pot, your tree will need regular watering, particularly during warm, dry weather.

Potted trees require extra attention as they dry out more quickly. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging and check regularly for roots growing through the bottom of the pot, which may indicate it’s time to repot.

Trees planted in the garden will also need watering while establishing, particularly during dry spells.
