Alcea rosea ‘Nigra’ is a tall perennial with shallow-lobed, rounded foliage and single, open, funnel-shaped flowers which are a deep red, almost black shade. Flowers Jun-September. Height 1.5-2.5m: width 0.5-1m in 1-2 years. Prefers well drained soil in full sun or semi-shade. Attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. Ideal for flower borders and beds, wall-side borders, cottage and informal planting schemes and coastal gardens. Requires staking on exposed sites. Cut back after flowering to encourage fresh, new growth.
