Glass by Sands

Sandra Cornes, the maker behind Glass by Sands, is based in Grange-over-Sands in South Cumbria. Since beginning her work with hot glass in 2016, she has developed a distinctive practice centred on colour, light and the expressive qualities of molten glass.

Creating each piece as the lead maker, Sandra combines confident forms with vibrant, shifting colours, embracing the natural variations that occur during the making process. Subtle marks and textures, formed through heat and handling, become part of the finished work—celebrating the idea that beauty lies in imperfection.

Artist Statement:

“I’ve always loved glass, the way it sparkles, the multiple colours that change with the light but making it is utterly amazing. There is something mesmerising about the way colours change in the heat; how easy it is to manipulate at 1000 degrees Celsius then, just as quickly, it’s as hard as glass (excuse the pun) at 600 degrees Celsius and you have to reheat it, or get quicker with your designs!“
