James Hake
We are thrilled to welcome potter James Hake, who originally from Cumbria, works in Lancashire in his studio in Over Kellet.
James is widely recognised for his large work, including square bottles, which are not slab built, but first thrown on the wheel then altered with a base and neck added on, resulting in strong dynamic seamless forms. Influenced by the work of Edward Hughes, James has a similar technical mastery evident in his glazing techniques. The bottles are fired on their sides so that the glaze, on the brink of dripping off is held in its spontaneous flow resulting in incredible layered effects, no two alike. James uses local materials to make his versions of classic Japanese glazes, such as Nuka and Tenmoku. This impressive collection includes platters, vases and small bottles, so something for all collectors to consider.
