Mridula Basi
New to the gallery, we are pleased to present work from emerging artist Mridula Basi, with a body of her skilful figurative paintings and sketches in various media. Based in smallholding in South Lanarkshire, Mirdula was born and brought up in India in early 70s where she studied for her degree in fine arts at Delhi College of Art, leaving in the summer of 1996 to emigrate to Scotland.
My art is reflective of my connection with the subject. When painting I resist trying to personalise and interpret the subject, it’s important for me to be able to let the story pass through me onto the combination of medium and surface then continue its journey through the spectator.
One striking work is a large oil, ‘The Copper Girl’ which has a quiet finery, and other paintings are inspired by the Scottish landscape in its different humours and conditions.
