Roos Eisma

Roos Eisma is a Dutch ceramicist based in Dundee. Following an earlier career in science, she developed a deep interest in working with clay, drawn to its expressive and transformative possibilities. Her practice is informed by a curiosity about how things function, both in natural systems and the constructed world, which she explores through form, structure, and movement.

Eisma creates sculptural vessels that balance intention with spontaneity. While initial forms are considered, each piece evolves organically through the making process. Working primarily in stoneware, she hand-builds her forms using techniques inspired by dressmaking, shaping flat slabs through darting and construction to create complex, curved structures. These are refined through careful modelling and trimming, resulting in precise edges and dynamic silhouettes.

Surface and texture play a central role in her work. She often incorporates textured slips and experimental glaze applications, including dry and volcanic finishes, to produce richly detailed and tactile surfaces.

Artist Statement:

“My interest in how things work, both in the natural and in the man-made world, guides me in trying to capture processes and movement in my work.

My sculptural vessels are each individual, with the shape partly planned and partly allowed to develop organically.

I love texture, sometimes adding a layer of textured slip to a piece, and using ‘dry’ glazes and volcanic glazes to further create interesting details in the surface.”
