Frans Wesselman is a stained glass artist whose practice combines traditional craftsmanship with a sensitive, contemporary approach to colour, light, and narrative. His work is defined by a careful selection of materials and a deep understanding of how glass can transform interior spaces through changing light and tone.
Working closely with the inherent qualities of glass, Wesselman often sources hand-blown materials to achieve richness and subtle variation in colour. His process balances technical precision with an intuitive approach to composition, resulting in pieces that are both considered and expressive.
At Larch Cottage, we commissioned Wesselman to create a series of nine stained glass windows for our chapel within the private garden. The windows form a sequence inspired by the creation of the Earth, alongside a distinctive swallow motif set within the apse. Each piece of glass was individually selected with great care, including mouth-blown glass made using traditional techniques, creating a vivid interplay of colour and light.
The windows sit in dialogue with the interior fresco by James Walsh, together forming a contemplative and immersive space within the chapel.
