Margaret Brampton is an established potter whose work has developed over many years into a distinctive and instantly recognisable style.
Working in thrown red terracotta slipware, she draws on traditional techniques and processes while introducing original and contemporary themes in her decoration. Her pieces are inspired primarily by flora and fauna, with designs carefully developed through sketchbook studies before being applied using finely detailed sgraffito drawing, reflecting the precision of botanical illustration.
A playful element often appears in her work, with modern song lyrics encircling her forms, creating a contrast between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary reference.
Each piece is finished with coloured oxides and underglaze, and covered in a clear, pale honey glaze that gives the surface a rich, luminous quality.
Margaret works from her home studio in Wales, where she continues to refine and develop her practice.
“Each bowl takes me a day to decorate. I have been making these for many years, so it still surprises me that it hasn’t become any quicker.” — Margaret Brampton
