A rare deciduous, columnar, whitebeam with silvery young leaves maturing to green with sparsely hairy undersides. White clusters of flowers appear in early summer followed by amber coloured berries in autumn. Compact and upright-growing to 9-10m. Ideal where space is limited. Native to Tibet, Bhutan and introduced by Kingdon-Ward. Originally listed as S. thibetica. Grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Hardy and tolerant of urban pollution and coastal conditions. Ht and Spr (after 10 years): 4m x 3m.
