An unusual evergreen shrub/tree with large leaves up to 30cm long. Ht 3-4 metres (10-12 ft ). The huge leaves resemble a Sweet Chestnut but are a deep green colour, very thick and stiff with a whitish furry underside. Edible pear-shaped yellow loquat fruit maybe be produced in very sheltered areas after a hot summer. Well-drained soil (not limey) in sun or part-shade. Best planted against a south-facing wall. Hardy to at least -9C. Continual hard frost will prevent this tree from fruiting as they flower in the winter.
